Hosting Friends For A Hurricane Evacuation Party

Our Hurricane Evacuation Party during Dorian was totally safe! If there was a serious threat we would be smart about it. This time around we were more looking for fun.

We live in Savannah, GA and I was told when I moved here, “we haven’t had a hurricane come through since the 70’s”! LIES, I blame climate change or bad luck but we’ve been through a hurricane (or scare) every year since we moved. I evacuated for the first one, I had a new puppy and husband was gone on a work trip. 3 of them we have hosted hurricane parties! My home is out of the usual evacuation zone (by about a mile) and while many friends live closer to downtown and flooding zones, it’s just more fun to go through it all together. The whole city shuts down and businesses closes for days in advance, so you have to make you own fun. Hence Hurricane Party!

The calm before the “storm”

Hurricane Parties are Simple

Puzzles, board games, a lot of wine, water and snacks. Snacks on snacks on snacks. This would be a great opportunity to try out those magical charcuterie boards we all lust over. I kept it very easy with crackers, cheeses, fruits, meats, dips, and puffed cheetos. I had everyone bring anything that could go perishable from their fridge or freezer if they lose power and we cooked it all!

Meals for 7 Adults, 2 Kids & 5 Dogs

We had quite the hurricane evacuation party for Dorian! Not so much that my friends were concerned but we were all SO BORED. It was a very slow moving storm so we had days of sitting and watching it creep closer. Everyone brought over and fixed their own lunches. Breakfast for 2 days were a mix of eggs, bacon, toast, yogurts and fruit. We kept a lot of snacks out all day but dinner was my time to shine!

Feeding this many people without proper grocery store preparation was a challenge I loved taking head on. I had a LOT of chicken breasts that I had thawed out and stuck them all in a crock pot with salsa and did tacos or taco salad for dinner that first night. It was great for crowds and we also had varying levels of food preferences between vegetarian, keto and children. There was plenty options with all of the toppings for everyone to make exactly what they wanted. Other ideas for feeding crowds last minute and easy are below!

Keep Conversation Flowing

We had some friends over who didn’t know each other well and I love having Table Topics to start conversation. I have the Dinner Party Table Topics and I’ve used them at parties and even on photoshoots to get the models talking. The “Best Things Ever” deck is also a crowd favorite. One I have on my wish list is the What Would You Do Table Topics deck that I think would really get conversation going. We also played games, worked on the hardest puzzle I’ve ever attempted in my life. Which we STILL didn’t finish in two days and this many people. Overall spending a genuine good time in the presence of awesome people was such a great way to make a potentially scary situation positive.

I know this post is highlighting the fun stuff. But we had cases upon cases of water, very prepared with flashlights and all other necessary emergency items. We haven’t been in an evacuation zone to date and by the time this slow moving hurricane got to us we weren’t so worried – just bored. Always be safe people!
